Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Attests that Sutter served as an artillery artificer from 18 January 1778 - 29 January 1780, was honorably discharged, and is entitled to the depreciation of his pay, which he has not received. Shaw signs as Henry Knox's aide-de-camp. Possibly created at New Windsor, New York.
