Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Knox writes to Colonel Heman Swift. Relates that he would quickly appoint the man Swift suggested as conductor, but cannot make such an appointment without the approval of the Board of War. Because the Board is without a conductor, agrees to appoint Swift's man temporarily. Refer to GLC02437.01031 for Swift's original request.
