Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Writes that he has sent, at "the first safe opportunity I had, those six maps you have subscribed for at Philadelphia. I hope they may meet your approbation; tho they are not printed so clean as I could wish, the least imagined to be done, but of all, has plagued me most, and caused me to this day to be a loser in a business, from which one would suppose I should have some compensation from the prospect, and infinite trouble I have had."
