Informs Washington he sent him a post concerning Captain Farley's confirmation "of the ill success of the Baron Steubens Mission." Says it appears they will not have possession of the Westward this fall and request Washington's final order concerning the detachment and artillery there. Knox's retained draft.

Last evening I wrote to your Excellency pr Express, [inserted: transmitting] [struck: concerning] the [information] by Captain Farley, of the ill success of [inserted: the] Baron Steubens Mission, [struck: and how] [inserted: by which it appears that it will be] impracticable [struck: it will be under any circumstances] to take possession of the posts [strikeout] at the Westward this Fall., [struck: and] [inserted: I] requested your final orders concerning the detachment and artillery at this place [struck: who] which are prepared for that service
