Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Certifies Major Stephen Rochefontaine as a member of the Corps of Engineers. Noted as a copy on the docket.

Rochefontaine was born Etienne Bechet, Sieur de Rochefontaine and anglicized his name to Stephen in 1792 when he returned to the United States after serving in his native France following the American Revolution. He also served as the Chief of Engineers, appointed by George Washington, from 1795-1798.
