Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

To Lieutenant Wheaton, possibly Joseph Wheaton. Pratt informs Wheaton "I neither conceive that I have the honor to Command the first Compy nor do I think it my duty to sign any return of it, or to give any General directions respecting it- while an officer of Superior Rank is present." Refers Wheaton to general orders directing colonels commanding brigades to sign all returns. Date previously inferred. Related to GLC02437.02890.
