At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

The Continental army was disbanded in 1783 following the conclusion of the Revolutionary War. One regiment, made up of soldiers from the disbanded army, continued in service at West Point after the other troops were discharged. Colonel Henry Jackson was first in rank of this regiment.
