Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 70,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World to soldiers’ letters from World War II and Vietnam. Writes, "On my quitting the army, you was so polite as to offer me a Certificate, manifesting that I quit the same with a fair character, but it being neglected on my part until this time, and it now might be of service to me, as a Candidate for Congress printing, would thank you for such Certificate per Bearer, and the favour will be soon acknowledged."
