Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Writes about the subject "of the Lands." Says Oliver Smith will attend to that business. General Brooks is going to write by this post. Hopes their mutual friend Dr. Eustis will obtain "the appointment of principal in the Medical line of the United States." Knows he will accept if it is offered. Assures that "Ben & David" are the only persons he spoke to about the lands.
