Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Summarizes and comments on the contract between Jackson and Flint and the Committee on the Sale of Eastern Lands, describing each article individually. Seems to have several problems with the terms of the sale. See GLC02437.05418 for the contract in its entirety.

During this period Sullivan was Attorney General for the State of Massachusetts. It is unclear whether he is commenting on the contract in that capacity. He would subsequently be elected governor of that state (1807-1808).
