At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 70,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World to soldiers’ letters from World War II and Vietnam. Summary of Content: Notes that twelve 4-pound and two 6-pound cannon and 5-10 tons of each size of various shot and shell were ordered on 27 November 1775. Several hundred more shells were ordered on 17 December.
