Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Created by Captain Lieutenant Hall of the 3rd Regiment of Artillery. Contains Hall's signature, possibly copied (document is in the hand of Samuel Shaw). Hall divides his assessment into 8 inch and 5 1/2 inch shells. Docketed 27 July 1782.
