Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

In Samuel Shaw's hand. Includes reports for Fort Clinton, Fort Putnam, Fort Webb, and other forts in the West Point vicinity. Docket states, "Major Villefranches observations of the [works] pieces and additions necessary to be performed at West Point and its dependencies."

In spring of 1782, George Washington assigned Major Villefranche to improve West Point's fortifications.
