Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Writes that he will leave papers with Morris and asks that he deliver them. Mentions a deed and how it should be handled, "signed before two or more witnesses." Goes on to give instructions on what to do with the papers. Ink is faded, especially on the first page. Watermarked "J Watt & C Patent Copying/Sold By J Woodmason/London." Letterpress copy.
