Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Orders regarding receiving the flag of truce and message of surrender from Confederate forces. States "The flag of truce will not be permitted to pass our lines." One bust engraving of an unidentified man included as collateral.

Stephen A. Hurlbut was a Union Major General of Volunteers and later Congressman from Illinois. Born in South Carolina.
