Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

There is "no further employ" for James Arden, a mason sent up from New York by Peter T. Curtenius "by Order of the Provincial Congress of New York." Therefore he is discharged, by order of General Montgomery. Written at "Head Quarters" Signed by Macpherson as Aide de Camp.

John Macpherson was the Aide de Camp to General Montgomery. He was killed at Quebec on 31 December 1775.
Peter Theobaldus Curtenius owned a hardware store in New York City, was a member of the "Committee of Correspondence," the predecessor of the New York Provincial Congress, and later served as New York state auditor.
