Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Hacker, who previously served in the Continental Navy, signs as a witness. Signed by Thomas Cooper as a witness. Signed by John Kelly, who authorizes the land transfer to William Cockburn. States that Cockburn owns a parcel of land called Summervale with Theophylact Bache and Goldsbrow Banyar.

During the mid eighteenth century, Banyar served in various posts of the Province of New York such as deputy auditor-general, deputy secretary, and deputy clerk of the council, Supreme Court. Bache was elected president of the New York chamber of commerce in 1777. Benjamin Franklin's daughter Sarah married Richard Bache, Theophylact's brother, in 1767.
