Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Handwritten document signed by Belcher as the Governor of Massachusetts. Also signed by J. Willard Story. With contemporary genealogical notes in the margins.

John North was the grandfather of Joseph and William North. Belcher served as governor of Massachusetts 1730-1741 and later governor of New Jersey 1747-1757.
