Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Partially printed document signed by Bernard as Massachusetts governor and Andrew Oliver as secretary. A manuscript note on the verso, dated 13 November 1760 and signed by Jacob Wendell and James Bowdoin as members of the governor's council, affirms that North took the oath of office. Features paper seal.
