Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Horace B. Gardner writes to Nellie Boardman from Fort Albany, where he is stationed with the 14th regiment. After writing that he has never heard her name before, he decribes his Fourth of July celebration, a picnic and fireworks. He writes about the fort and camp life. Gardner identifies the "Sutler" as the worst enemy to the soldiers, listing the high prices of his goods. This letter is on McClellan lettersheet with McClellan patriotic image envelope.
