Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Letters dated July 5, 12, and 22 1862. First McClellan lettersheet with McClellan patriotic, second on choice multicolor Magnus General Halleck lettersheet, eagle and shield patriotic. Last on plain paper with multicolor Magnus White House Views patriotic. Letters mention deserters, a duel, Fort Albany's artillery. All addressed to same Massachusetts address.

Horace B. Gardner was born c. 1844 and raised in Massachusetts. He enlisted in Company M, 1st Massachusetts Heavy Artillary (formerly 14th Regiment Mass. Volunteer Infantry) in March 1862. After being discharged in November 1864, he lived in Salem, Mass, where he worked as a baker. He died on 18 July 1909.
