Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Horace B. Gardner writes to Nellie Boardman. Responding to her suggestion that a draft may be required to fill the Massachusetts quota, he discusses the value of fighting in defense of his country and her laws. Gardner writes of the 14th Regiment's potential move to Richmond, and of his kind Captain and Lieutenant. He discusses the food available to the soldiers and explains that farmers come to camp to trade milk for bread. His letter is on choice multicolor Magnus General Halleck lettersheet, with a eagle and shield patriotic envelope.
