Wheeler became a Confederate colonel of the 19th Alabama Infantry in September 1861. He was promoted to Brigadier General in October 1862. Wheeler was noted for his command of cavalry during the Civil War, was wounded three times and had sixteen horses shot from under him. He was known as "Fightin' Joe Wheeler."
