Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Robert Gould Shaw commanded the famous 54th Massachusetts Colored Infantry during the Civil War, and died in battle July 1863 at Fort Wagner, South Carolina. The monument commemorating Shaw and the 54th was completed by sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens and dedicated in Boston in 1897. The committee that organized the creation of the Shaw monument included several noted authors, philanthropists, and abolitionists of the period.
