Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Broadside announcing sale of "real and personal property," including enslaved people, from the estate of William R. Robertson. Lists 600 acres of land in the town of Union, Missouri, 19 or 20 enslaved people, farming utensils, horses, cattle, and hogs. States the enslaved people consist of "...men, women, girls, and boys, comprising several good house and farm servants, and some good weavers." Cheatham is the assignee.
