Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

The indenture sets the terms of John Reid, Jr.' s apprenticeship with Robert Livingston, Jr. to learn the trade of a merchant for 5 years. It commands Reid to obey his master's every command, to maintain his secrets and confidence, and to abstain from marriage (among other things) during the course of his apprenticeship.
