Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Lindsey writes that he has just returned from Africa on Robert, Jr.'s Sloop Storke after a 32 months at sea. He notes that he has declined an offer to continue on another voyage, explaining that he lost 2 sons while he was away, and therefore desires to be with his wife and family for a while.
