Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Describes toys recently received for Christmas. The author is a cousin of the recipient. Docketed "Blair Lee, Esq.," indicating that the author and recipient were related to Francis Preston Blair Lee, a Senator, lawyer, and social reformer from Maryland.

Francis Preston Blair Lee was the great grandson of Francis Preston Blair, editor of the Democratic Washington, D.C. newspaper, The Globe, between 1829 and 1845.
