Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Wood signs as a witness. Walter, of Auburn, New York, promises to pay Smith, of Albany, New York $2,000. States that if Walter pays Smith $1000 in one year, the previous obligation is void.

Wood served as counselor in the New York Supreme Court, 1835, and in the United States Supreme Court, 1845. He was a United States Representative from New York 1845-1846.
