Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Collection primarily contains signatures from nineteenth and twentieth century Senators and Representatives. Other signatures are included, such as Youngdahl (Governor of Minnesota 1947-1951); William Moultrie (Revolutionary War patriot); William F. Packer (Pennsylvania Governor 1858-1861); Frank L. Polk (Acting Secretary of State 1920); Sir Oliver Mowat (Canadian statesman); Jeremiah Sullivan Black (Attorney General 1857-60 and Secretary of State 1860-1861) among others. United States Congressmen include William E. Mason (Illinois, late nineteenth/early twentieth century); Henry Dodge (Delegate and Senator from Wisconsin 1841-1856); Chilton Allen White (Representative from Ohio 1861-1864), among others.
