Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Bope writes to his sister from Camp Shiloh. States they have nothing to do, but expects to meet the Rebels in a few days. Mentions that 30 Rebels surrender every day. Complains that the apples she sent him did not arrive, but all her letters do. Informs her he sent her a letter with a gold dollar in it. Envelope includes patriotic imagery.

Conrad Bope enlisted on 5 August 1861 in Ohio as a private. He was mustered into "K" Co., Ohio 49th Infantry.
