Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Describes fighting another hard battle. States, "the Army never fought So hard befor thair wos so men killed and wonded and missen in our Rege- thair is 40 men left in the three Compene and some of them wos wounded but some wore out by hard marches…all the officers is wonded but one Capt and Leutenet..." Describes the place being the prettiest area with the nicest girls. Comments on how many Copperheads there are in the states. Mentions the farmers complaining about the army marching through their fields: they "was not Pleased because we wos fiting on thair land but men in merland cheard to see us coming and the woman Give us all they had and at every yard Gate you would see them Standing with a bucket of watter and what evor they had to Give the Soldiers..."

John Reeser enlisted as a Private on 16 July 1864. He was mustered into "B" Co. PA 197th Infantry. He was promoted to Corporal on 18 August 1864. He was mustered out on 11 November 1864 at Philadelphia, PA. Jones was part of Company B, 11th Cavalry. Possibly written from Funksstown, Maryland during the Battle of Funkstown.
