Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Discusses arriving in Washington, D.C. on Tuesday to look for work. Comments on the low wages in Washington and finding higher wages in Alexandria. Describes beginning work on Saturday repairing a bridge that the rebels tried burning. Reports that the bridge is about two miles from Alexandria on the Orange and Alexandria Railroad. Inquires about his farm. Comments on his boss telling him he strikes the men too quickly.

John Reeser enlisted as a Private on 16 July 1864. He was mustered into "B" Co. PA 197th Infantry. He was promoted to Corporal on 18 August 1864. He was mustered out on 11 November 1864 at Philadelphia, PA. Jones was part of Company B, 11th Cavalry.
