Most of the letters are written by E. S. Russell to his wife. There is a possibility that some of the letters are out of order due to no year being listed. Letters discuss camp life, marching experiences, and his health. Throughout his letters his health slowly deteriorates. One document appears to be a prayer written in German. Collection includes five items with folk cures, incantations and recipes.

E. S. Russell enlisted as a private on 1 November 1861. He mustered into "G" Co. OH 65th Infantry. He died of disease on 8 May 1862 at Louisville, Kentucky.
