Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Taney was appointed Attorney General of Maryland in 1827, then became President Andrew Jackson's Attorney General in 1831. He served as Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court 1836-1864. Williams was a Baltimore lawyer, state senator, and United States District Attorney for Maryland, 1824-41.
