Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Discusses a payment he must make and states he is unable to pay it at the time because money he was expecting did not come through. Hopes to be able to pay it next time he is in Baltimore. The year could be either 1823 or 1825 because the handwriting is unclear.

Samuel Chase is possibly the son of Samuel Chase (1741-1811) Continental Congressman and signer of the Declaration of Independence. Chase Jr. was born in 1773 and died 1841. Williams was a Baltimore lawyer, state senator, and United States District Attorney for Maryland, 1824-41.
