The letter is missing its opening section. All that remains are the closing paragraphs, Campbell's signature, and a postscript announcing his good health. Campbell conveys his opinions regarding politics, public sentiment at home, and concerns of a schism within Congress: "I have observed with much regret, extracts of letters from members of Congress, announcing a schism in the Cabinet ..."
