Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Includes personal news and an account of his escape from the British in New York in 1778. Accompanied by a sheet of paper that appears to have originally stored the documents, stating "Capt Hewsons Letters to my Father Rufus Lincoln." Includes a modern envelope that the letters may have been stored in. There are eight letters total.
