At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Certifies Captain James of the 24th regiment of Virginia cavalry as a paroled prisoner of the Army of Northern Virginia and gives him permission to go home safely and undisturbed.

William Henry Fitzhugh Lee was Robert E. Lee's second oldest son "Rooney." He commanded the Confederate cavalry on the right during the retreat from Petersburg to Appomattox. Lee surrended to Grant on 9 April 1865 at the Appomattox Courthouse.
