Title taken from accompanying text.Officers of the 48th NY Infantry garrisoned the fort and posed for the camera along with their colonel, W.B. Barton, standing with his wife in the right foreground. A black dog can be seen at one man's feet. The man reclining on the swivel behind the first gun appears to have had his left leg amputated. In the distance is the mouth of the Savannah River, and on the horizon, Tybee Island. After Fort Pulaski had been nearly destroyed by Union bombardments in April 1862, it would be occupied and rebuilt by the Union Army, the repairs being completed by 1863.
