Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

A print of a photograph of the Army of Potomac headquarters at Brandy Station, VA. Zouaves from the 114th Penn. standing in front of wall of brush with winter quarters and tents in background. Thrown up on the wall of brush to dry out are government issued wool blankets and canvas shelter-halves. The men wear their dress uniforms which include turbans. Graphite inscription on verso: "Gardner XI 302."

Same content and angle as another O'Sullivan photograph, seen at the Library of Congress here: https://www.loc.gov/resource/cwpb.03979/. Given the identical angle, position of stacked branches, etc. it must clearly be the same day. Therefore the previous version of this entry giving the date as February of 1864 must be incorrect.
