Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Announces the terms of surrender between Confederate General Edmund Kirby Smith and Union General Edward Richard Sprigg Canby. Printed general orders. Christensen's rank was Lieutenant Colonel, Assistant Adjutant General.

The last significant Confederate force, the Trans-Mississippi Department was surrendered on 26 May 1865 by General Smith to Canby, the commander of the Military Division of West Mississippi.
