Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Countersigned by the comptroller and auditor. Filled in form of the Department of Northern Virginia, Chief Engineer's Office authorizing the Secretary of the Treasury to pay $30 ($10 in gold bullion) for a reproduction of Lieutenant M. McDonald's map of Richmond (see GLC 5987.20). It is to be made with "chloride or gold" through a "photographic process."
