Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Mentions that he had a meeting with the commissioners "under the Florida Treaty," referring to the 1819 Adams-Onis Treaty (annexing Florida), which was ratified in 1821. The bulk of the letter discusses a claim related to a bankruptcy case, and mentions "the late law of the U.S. establishing an uniform system of B y" and seeks Hobart's assistance in the matter.
