Mixter lived and worked in Boston at the beginning of the Civil War. He volunteered for military service 19 April 1861, serving in the 22nd Massachusetts Regiment. In 1864, he was commissioned as 1st Lieutenant Adjutant, 3rd Regiment North Carolina Colored Volunteers, after which he resigned from military service due to severe illness. Mixter's diaries discuss historical events such as abolitionism, Civil War battles, and the 1864 election. He also records frequent contact with his family and reports other the details of daily life, referring often to food, illness, and medication.
