Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Archer signs over to Stone the title for "one half of the land secured to me...by the annexed deed...by N.F. Smith." Witnessed by William Christy, Willis A Jarvis, and J.W. Moorly. The deed from Niles Smith appears on p. 2-3, and specifies the location of the land and indicates that Branch paid Smith $1,000 for it. Signed by Smith on p. 3 and witnessed by Henry Millard, E. Harris, and J.G. Welsh Meyer.

Archer was a leader in the Texas Revolution, delegate to the Convention of 1833, a member of the first Texas Congress, and speaker of the Texas House of Representatives in its second session.
Smith was a Texas patriot who had served in the Corps of Engineers during the Texas Revolution.
