Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Signed by West as president of the Board of Land Commissioners of Jefferson County, Texas, and countersigned by Hezekeah Williams and John Bollinger. Attested to by Joseph P. Pulsifer, clerk. Certifies that Pevito came to Jefferson County in October 1835 and that he was a married man "entitled to one league and labor of land," on the condition that he paid the outlined rates for the land.

West was a political leader and signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence. He held several public offices was elected to the Texas House of Representatives.
Pulsifer was an early Texas apothecary and a founder of Beaumont. He took an active, nonmilitary role in the Texas Revolution and held many public offices, including clerk of the Jefferson County Board of Land Commissioners.
