Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Promise made "in lieu of E.A. Townsends Certificate for one League & Labor of Land." In a note on the verso dated 19 December 1838, J.B. Johnson writes: "By cash of the within fifty dollars."

LeGrand was a soldier and signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence. From 1836 to 1838 he served as chief justice of San Augustine County and in November, 1839, he was elected inspector of the Third Brigade of the Texas militia.
