Convicted of violating Internal Revenue laws; sentenced to pay a $1000 fine and to be imprisoned until fine is paid. Pardoned after spending some months in prison and proving entirely unable to pay the fine due to poverty, and by recommendation of the U.S. District Attorney, A.S. Ridgby, the Mayor of Baltimore, most of the jury who convicted him, and many respectable citizens. (c/s William H. Seward)
