At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

"Articles of Convention and Agreement" made on 17 January 1837 allowing the Chickasaw to create a district within the Chocktaw land and to have representation in the Chocktaw General Council. Authorized by President Martin Van Buren. Ratified on 24 March 1837.
